Education: OUR ANNUAL MEETING and SUPER SHOW in 11 days. If you have not signed up, you have a couple of days left and you need to attend this year with lots of new programs, education, MRS points and CASH and prizes.
Area VII had a Technology and Teaching seminar at PGA Superstore with Ed LaPierre, PGA, doing a great job with his presentation and about 25 PGA Professionals in attendance. Upcoming Area VII Meeting – March 19 at The Grande Dunes Members Club. Keep in mind, this meeting will be an election year for our Grand Strand / Area VII, and we will be voting on a new Director.
Rounds of Golf and Weather: Resort, Public and Private Course rounds were all down as weather plagued our area in our last quarter. Just a bad end to a record setting weather event year. Hurricane Florence showed up in September and caused quite a bit of damage and then flooding followed Florence. As mentioned, record rain of over 100+ inches for 2018. We have at least started January with much better weather than January 2018.
Area VII employment totals vs 2017:
12/31/17 - 173 members - 38 associates
12/31/18 - 169 members - 34 associates.
We are down in both Associates and Members from 2017. Talking to several Area VII Professionals, many are having a hard time finding qualified candidates.
Course Conditions: Most of the courses on the Grand Strand are reporting good conditions now. Many Area VII courses experienced winter kill this past year, with several having to close and re do greens and areas of fairways. Most resort courses are over seeding with the winter rye grass, good conditions for most. A couple of clubs in Area VII have been painting fairways and tees again this year with great success. One golf course is still closed from damages from Hurricane Florence and the flooding experienced after the storm but is scheduled to open this spring.
Membership Numbers: Of the private courses that I spoke with, mixed numbers. Several have had declining membership numbers with others reporting some gain in their membership numbers for 2018 last quarter.
Tournament Activities: There were a number of tournaments that got cancelled in October due to weather issues, but resumed in late October and November. Public and Resort courses continued busy with their package play after the hurricane! TPC Myrtle Beach will be hosting 2 national stage events. The Dustin Johnson World Junior Invitational March 1-3 and also the NCAA East Regional in May.
I want to thank all Area VII Professionals for their support over the past 5 and a half years of my tenure as your Area Director. It has been a pleasure and if there is ever anything I can do to help you, please do not hesitate to contact me. See ya in Greensboro!
