An update from your new Area Director, Dan O'Boyle, PGA:

As we begin 2019, I would like to introduce myself as the new Atlantic Area Director. As the Director of Golf at Sea Scape Golf Links, I returned to the section in 2014 following eight years in the Middle Atlantic Section. The Outer Banks of North Carolina is a great place to call home. At Seascape, we host the PGA Junior League, LPGA Girl's Golf Club and numerous middle and high school golf practices and matches. Junior golf is growing on the Outer Banks and we look forward to adding more events in 2019. My wife Trish and our 14-year old son Flynn live in Currituck County, North Carolina. Now entering my 23rd year as a PGA professional, I am excited to serve the section as well as the Atlantic Area and its’ members.

Congratulations and thank you to Buddy Lawrence PGA on his new position as General Manager at Springdale Country Club in Canton, North Carolina. We are grateful for Buddy's tireless efforts serving as Area Director for four years. Best of luck and a sincere thank you for all you have done for us. Aaron Palen PGA has joined the section as The Head Golf Professional at Duck Woods Country Club. Welcome Aaron. Dan Aros PGA has accepted the position of Head Golf Professional at Greenbrier Country Club in Chesapeake, Virginia. Good luck Dan. Employment numbers remain consistent and 2017 saw an increase of 3 members to 73, with 9 associates in our area.

Rounds of Golf/Weather

Weather again had a major impact on golf rounds in our area in 2018. Hurricane Florence devastated much of eastern North Carolina in September 2018. Nags Head Golf Links had damage to bulkheads on their sound side holes.

Best Practices

PGA Junior League programs continue to expand it is a terrific way to introduce juniors to the game. Currently we have seven facilities that are participating in PGA Junior League in the Atlantic Area. The program provides all the information and promotional materials needed to start a program. At Sea Scape, we have seen revenue increases in all areas of our operation directly attributable to the PGA Junior League.

Finally, in late 2018 the Carolinas Section purchased a large group coaching kit from Snag Golf for the Atlantic Area. “Snag” (Starting New at Golf) Golf offers the versatility to learn and play in almost any environment you choose. The Snag coaching system uses specially designed equipment that helps the beginner progress through the learning curve faster and more effectively. The kit contains all the equipment and information on how to set up the program and is available at Sea Scape at any time.

Upcoming Events

The Atlantic Area Spring meeting will be held Wednesday April 17th at Wilson County Club. Thank you to Reid Hill PGA for hosting the event. Look for more details as the date approaches.

There is only a couple days left to register for the CPGA SUPER SHOW! I hope to see everyone there for enhanced educational opportunities, engaging speakers, and fun engagement with fellow professionals!

Finally, I want to thank you for the warm welcome and I look forward to serving the Section in 2019.

Respectfully Submitted,

Dan O'Boyle - Atlantic Area Director
